Mania

Wow, so many thanks to all of you who chimed in on helping me identify that Singer sewing machine! I'm so happy to know a little more about it. It is indeed a powerhouse of a machine and when i first sewed on it two years ago, i could not believe how many layers of fabric it would go through...without a snarl or missed stitch. Amazing! Needless to say i feel fortunate to be its caretaker for now.

This morning, i was surprised, delighted, ecstatic, and honored to discover that my lil' ol' quilt called Pond Garden made it onto the cover of Quiltmania magazine's special summer edition!

I designed and made this quilt for Market last fall using a jelly roll and some yardage from Good Fortune. Now you can make it too! If you don't speak French, you can find the english version of the magazine here.
In my last post, i mentioned that we're moving. After we put our house on the market, to our shock and disbelief, it sold in two weeks. We didn't expect that to happen so quickly, and we certainly didn't have time to find another place to live in order to line everything up for a smooth transition from one house to the next. If only! Moving once is hard enough, but we'll have the misfortune of moving twice. Calgon, take me away!
Needless to say, life has been a bit of a blur lately — except for the screechy scratchy sound of packing tape and the obstacle course of cardboard boxes around here. We've been packing non-stop for the past two weeks, but just last night, while i was taking the curtains down in our living room, i started to think about all that has happened in the 8 years that we've lived here. Best of all...marrying Pete! Otherwise, way too many things to list and so many life changes. I'm sure the same is true for you, too. After all, our homes are where our lives happen — the good parts, bad parts, and everything in between.

I also started my business here. And by "here" i mean right where i'm sitting as i type this now. I designed my first fabric collection, mug, paper plate, greeting card, dishtowel etc. from this chair, in this room, in this house, looking out this window at the same maple tree across the street that i've watched change over the years and from season to season. I've learned and grown so much here, and am grateful for every moment of it. Though these items can't be packed in a suitcase, i will take them with me wherever we go.

Another wonderful thing that happened during our time here has been getting to know so many of you! Thank you always for your comments, support and friendships. Btw, there are a few things that we just couldn't squeeze into our moving boxes, so i was wondering if anyone could possibly help us out by giving a home to one of these?
Anyone? Please toss a comment into the box and i'll pick three lucky winners. Thanks for your "help" *wink*

*****Comments are closed for this, but come back soon! Another giveaway coming up soon*****

The upside of moving is that Franny and Lou are loving all these boxes!

Have a great weekend.
xo,
kate

  18. Oh, I *think* we can help with the things you can't fit in the boxes ;o) Good luck with the move (don't tape the kitties inside a box!) - I hope you get settled soon x
P.S. Over here Calgon is a product to stop lime-scale build up in your washing and the motto (or whatever it's called...maybe a tag line?) is 'Washing machines live longer with Calgon'. You definitely wouldn't want to bathe in that!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Good luck with the move! Whata lovely giveaway. Thanks for the chance!

    ReplyDelete
  20. A little Calgon always helps the situation especially when paired with a nice bath time dessert! Best wishes to you in this next chapter in your life

  25. Congrats on your impending move, I'm sure that you'll create new memories at your new home. Love your fabric lines, I have many of them, but I'm having a really difficult time cutting into the fabric, it's really too pretty to cut!

  27. I feel your pain. We are moving, but fortunately only once! Love that quilt pattern. Just bought the magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I feel your pain on moving...we sold a home in 24 hours & had to be out in 30 days! It is hard to leave a home to make another but what an adventure!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. oh my gosh, of course I have to enter this! LOVE it! The always seems to be the case. Hope you are able to get settled & the kitties too. Our cats were not fond of our moves.

    ReplyDelete
  30. We moved last summer, and it's definitely on my list of least favorite things to do. But congrats on selling so quickly - it must be the yellow kitchen! Good luck surviving the move!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I assume the fabrics need a home, not the cats! I know you couldn't part with your furry friends. I would be beyond thrilled to help with the fabrics! Your designs are always so gorgeous. I have some pieces from some of your earlier lines that I'm still admiring before I'm brave enough to cut them. Thanks for the chance and best of luck with the chaos of moving.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh my Kate, I do not envy you! Although moving is a great opportunity to purge, it's just so much work and change. Very stressful, but your kitties will help you get through it. So sad those fabric bundles couldn't fit! If you find more that won't fit, feel free to toss them this way ;) It's such a pleasure working with your fabrics.

  36. UGH! I hate moving! We've been married for 9 years and have moved 4 times. We thought this last time would be the last time, but that future has yet to be written. In the meantime, we're enjoying not thinking about moving! Our kitties loved the boxes, but were always nervous because they knew a move was coming. My thoughts are with you as you pack up and pray for a smooth move.

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's what we do when we move, give things away! Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I know how it is to move a lot faster than you'd expeceted! Like you, we ended up with two moves instead of one. But it's a good thing though that your house sold fast.
Wish you luck with your move and in building new memories in a new place!
And I would be more than happy to help you out with the stuff you couldn't fit in the box! :-)
    Thank you!

  53. We just finished moving our daughter and son-in-law to a bigger house, then the following week we moved our son. I'm done with moving for awhile. My niece just showed me colors she loves for her graduation quilt. These would be perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ugh, I hate moving! I'd be glad to help you find a spot for that gorgeous fabric!

  57. Every home has some sentimental feelings. I just made a house quilt commemorating the 5 homes we've lived in. Lots of fun memories making that! So glad your boxes were full!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh, moving--not my favorite! Once upon a time I moved five times in five years--that was terrible! So, see, it could always be worse, right? I'd happily ease your suffering. Heck, since I live right around the corner for now!), I wouldn't even make you ship it! See how helpful I am?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'd love to lighten your moving load:). Such a beautiful line!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh, sweet Kate. I completely understand your sentimentality about those 4 walls. It's so hard to leave a home. The worst part for me was leaving my garden. So many plants given to me by family and friends over the years and it was the wrong time of year when I moved to try to take anything with me. I still drive by and stalk my old house and garden. : )

    ReplyDelete
  61. Moving is the 'pits' and it is always bittersweet. So, anything we can do to help lessen the burden and reduce the number of boxes you need to move, we are there for you! Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Oh good luck moving. I went through the exact same thing a year ago. Our house sold in a week, we had to move and didn't have a place to move to...a 1000 miles away. And I had an 18 month old active little girl. And the cat. Yep. Good times. ;)

But I'm all nice and settle now finally and my sewing room would happily help you out by storing that fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I would love the chance to move - clean out the olds stuff and start anew! Thanks for the give-away.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hey Kate! I cross my fingers that your new home will be as nice as your current one, that it will inspire you as inthe past and that all other treees across the road will bring color in your day, pleas please please keep on creating such beautiful fabric collections!

  75. The last time we moved was about 1 year after we got married when we moved to our property. There have been a LOT of changes to our house (2 additions, a total remodel of the original interior, a garage, a hay shed, etc.) but that was over 30 years ago-I could not even comprehend moving. I think stuff shrinks to accommodate space rather than space growing to accommodate stuff! Hope this next series of moves is your last-moving is hard work.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Congrats on selling your house so quickly even though it forces you to rush with everything else. Hope you have smooth sailing with both moves.

When my grandpa died two years ago at the beginning of June the same thing happened with his house. My parents and aunt & uncle went crazy cleaning it out. Then my aunt & uncle painted the rooms & updated the bathroom to get it on the market a couple of weeks later. Within a week it was sold. It really all depends on the market of where you live and the time of year. Realtor keep on saying best time to sell is during the summer. My grandpa's house was a couple of towns over from you.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hi Kate! I am new to quilting and just taught myself how to sew. It has been such a fulfilling craft for me. I love your fabrics and have enjoyed your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I just closed on my very first house on Tuesday. I have been scrimping and saving for the down payment for a few years, so the feeling of finally turning that key was great. I hope to spend many years in my new home and also learn and grow in this house as you have in yours. Change can be hard, but it also presents us with so many new opportunities. Good luck with your house search!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Good luck with the move! I do think I could give a happy home to that fabric without too much trouble. :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Why, sure, I can help you out with that extra fabric! We've moved 14 times, so I can say that without a doubt each move brought great positives and, of course, a couple of negatives, but all in all, life has NOT been boring!! Hope all goes smoothly with your move.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Wow, I think I could probably give a wonderful home to any of those, ha ha ha ha. I love this line. Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Good luck finding your new home! I'm sure you'll pay close attention to which boxes your kitties frequent. We tend to leave the odd box sitting out until our cat loses interest in it. Thanks for the chance, your fabrics are gorgeous!

  86. I will gladly take any fabric you are willing to give away. I don't envy you with the move though. I HATE moving. I've been in my house for 30 years now & I don't plan on going anywhere. Thanks for the chance to win that beautiful fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Oh, that's a great quilt!! I love the japanese lanterns - such a great touch!! And how wonderful that your house sold quickly - sorry about the two moves, but it's so much better than the alternative - sitting on a house that won't sell! I'll gladly help you out with anything you can't find a space in those boxes for - I promise to give it a good home!

PS be careful not to seal a cat in a box - I did that once, didn't know the cat had climbed in and burrowed under some towels I had put in the box straight out of the dryer. That was one mad cat!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I hate packing, but I hate unpacking even more. Enjoy your move.

  89. Congrats on sellinf your house so quickly, even if it does mean you have to move twice!

  91. I moved seventeen times in the first ten years I was married but we've been stationary for the last twenty-four. I am glad I'm not moving now because I have soooo much stuff. Hope you find a house quickly! And thanks for sharing your goodies.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Congratulations on selling you house so quickly & good luck with the move. I am laughing because in the UK "calgon" is a tablet you add to your washing machine when you do your laundry to prevent limescale (it even has it own jingle "washing machines live longer with calgon"). Best wishes, Sara

  99. As a child, I didn’t like moving; leaving friends and a bedroom that I made my own, but as an adult, the moving experience was exciting because it meant a new chapter in my life. So I hope that this move is a new beginning for you, where you and your loved ones will flourish and create many happy memories. I am a new quilter and I cannot get enough of your beautiful fabric designs. So….pick me! Pick me!

  100. Good luck with all the packing, moving and such. Never ever a fun chore even when you want to move. And I would be more than happy to help by taking some of the lovelies off your hands:)

    ReplyDelete
  101. Well, I'd take the fabric off your hands. But only to help you out, you know! I mean, I certainly don't have about a dozen and one projects in mind that would be great with that fabric, nope, not me.

    congrats on everything!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Oh Please! Pick me!! I would just love to help you with anything that doesn't fit, it would make my day :)(week, month) I have been drooling over this fabric.
I can never quite decide if the nostalgic feeling of moving is happy or sad. I pray it goes smoothly for you and you find just the perfect place. I did the double move once when my house sold the first week, it was not easy. Best wishes!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I haven't seen that quilt yet, it is really cute! Definitely something different than the norm. Moving can be so bittersweet, especially when you have so many great memories in the home you are moving out of. I like to look on the bright side though, it's a GREAT opportunity to get rid of clutter! Congrats on selling so quickly!

  104. We just moved across the country a few months ago... Im finally getting to my sewing machine now and so happy to have my own sewing space.

  106. Hi Kate, I so understand the moving thing. We've planted special trees, one was a wedding gift, special plants and redone the kitchen and many other things to make our house a home. I wish I could take them with me when we move, but alas, we can't. Hope you, Pete & my fav bloggie kitties transition smoothly. And your stuff that won't fit? I will be happy to help you!

    ReplyDelete
  107. That is a cute quilt! Of course I would be willing to help you out with the fabric, too...

    ReplyDelete
  115. Several years ago, we moved five times in 18 months. I'll be happy if we never move again. (Although, moving always helps you clear out the accumulated junk.)

I'd be happy to take some of that extra fabric off your hands. Good luck with the move!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Good luck with your move. Try to not over do or stress out too much. The more you give away the less you have to pack.LOL Just saying...Thanks for the chance to win some of your gorgeous fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Congrats on selling your house so fast, but as one who just completed a cross-country move (with two cats and three dogs in tow), I don't envy you the packing and unpacking. I think we'll be unpacking for months!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Hope the moving goes well! Love love love the new cuzco fabrics :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. Please don't put me in the drawing (I already have my little stash of Cuzco waiting for the perfect project) I just wanted to say that I loved that quilt at market and I was hoping there would be a pattern sometime. So exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  122. How fantastic (and sad) that your house sold so quickly! I've moved a lot over the years (until 4 years ago, we moved every 2-3 years)...one thing I've learned...the most important things are the ones you can't pack in a box...but in your heart, and you will unpack and repack them many times! Of course...I'd be happy to take any of those packable items off your hands! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  123. We moved twice in the last 12 months. It was hard work! Hope it goes smoothly for you. I would love to relieve you of some of that fabric. What can I say? I love to help others out!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I just moved last year and it is such a wonderful, horrible, exciting and excruciating process!! Keep the Calgon handy. I would love to win some of your Cuzco precuts - beautiful use of color!. If you need a home for scraps, I would certainly help you out :-)

    ReplyDelete
  125. What a coincidence! My new fabric organizer (former shoe organizer) has plenty of room!

  127. I feel your pain! We put our house on the market a few years ago the week after Thanksgiving and has an offer in 2 weeks. We moved to a rental the week between Christmas and New Year's!

    Good luck to you!!

  129. Good luck with your move. Even though it's such a hassle I always love the clean closets afterwards.

  130. Oh, that happened to me with quickly selling a house, but fortunately I had already made an offer on a new house, pending the sale of my old house, so the quick sale was very welcome! And I kind of feel your pain now, as I'm helping my daughter and son-in-law move! Summer is soooo not the right time to move in Arizona!!!

Good luck! You will make many more memories in your new home!

  134. I'm moving in two weeks so I really shouldn't... but I think your fabric might want an all-expense paid scenic tour of the US, which we'll be able to provide! Just think of the adventures! ;-) Good luck with the move! I feel for ya!

I'm terrified to move....I have just too much stuff but I think there's room for that bundle of fabric in my craft room.
    Thanks.

  144. Please, please. Pick me. Even if you don't pick me I will still come back to your blog just to see the cats! Terry

  145. Oh my goodness, yes! Thanks for sharing these lovelies with us! I hope that everything goes smoothly with your move.

  146. I think that I have some room for a bundle of your beautiful fabric but it wouldn't be sitting on the shelf for long because I would sew it into a quilt!! Thanks for your generosity! You are my favorite fabric designer - seriously!!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Wow, that was fast. I'd be happy to help you out and take that fabric off your hands, anything I can do to help you out. I hope the move goes smoothly, it's such a sad and exciting time.

  148. Remember to breathe during this crazy time. Take a little time to remember the wonderful time in this home before letting another family have their time.

  149. When we bought our house, my husband was living in a hotel down here 5 days a week, while I was back in the rental... the process took forever for everything to be signed and finished, and then the Monday after Thanksgiving, he called to tell me we'd be moving Tomorrow! Thankfully, I'd been trying to pack a little at a time, but still- talk about hectic. I hope your move goes smoothly and as stress-free as possible! I'd love to "help" with the fabric. Good luck!

  150. Wishing you "Good Fortune" with your move! So sweet of you to share your beautiful new fabric line!

  151. Good luck moving...I was so sad when our first house sold (I think I secretly wished it wouldn't, so we could move back some day!), two years and three houses later (thank you Army for dragging us around!), I keep thinking it will be easier next time...but I'm already dreading next year's move!

And hooray for your house selling! I have plenty of room to take any precuts you need off your hands! **wink**

  152. I love/hate moving! I'm eager to go somewhere else, but really love it here. Good luck -- I hope you have a nice landing spot for your interim. If so, take your time in finding your new home. meanwhile, Id be very glad to help in my own small way by taking in some of those yummo fab!

  153. Sometimes the transitional move ends up being a blessing in disguise that prevents you from settling on something less than perfect to avoid the double move. Think of it as breathing room...well, maybe once you get through the packing. My heart stopped when I saw pictures of your Cuzco line. I have a Grandmother's Garden In progress that's been set aside while I wait for your this line to be released. One way or another I will be happily fussy cutting them!

  158. I would be happy to give a home to one of the bundles! I promise to take excellent care of it, and love it in quilts and pillows, and any number of beautiful things!

  162. Moving can be fun, happy and sad and very stressful, the best part is when you get into your new home and start unpacking and make a new place for all of you. We had that happen to us in our first house. Your kitties will love it new territory for them to explore. Our Zeus hide in the closet for two weeks after our last move but he is really shy. I am sure I can make a home for some of your beautiful fabric. At least you can take us with you. Hugs And blessings Sandra

  163. Wow, 2 weeks, that is quick!! Good luck with the packing and hope both Franny and Lou find a different mode of transport to their new digs ;)

  168. Isn't it funny that the children always like the boxes more than what is in them?

  169. Many blessings on your move. Change is usually bittersweet, but no doubt many new blessings await you once you're settled in your new home. :-)

  170. Thank you for the chance to win some of your gorgeous fabric so you don't have to pack it for a move. My empathy for your move had similar logistical experience with fast sale/close/move. Here's a wish being sent your way for a smooth move and landing in a house you really really like.

  171. Hope your kitties are as excited about the new house as they are the boxes!!
Your kitchen story is a mini "If These Walls Could Talk"! It's always interesting to tear something away and find things the previous owners have done. Some good, some not so good! :D

  172. Good luck with the move! It's always a bit of a nightmare until you are once again settled and a good chance to do a bit of decluttering!!!
    What a nice giveaway!!!!

  173. Congratulations, Kate, on your quilt being a "Cover Girl"! Moving is such hard work. Good luck in your search for your new home. I could picture the maple tree as you described it. Have a super weekend!

  174. Having moved a lot (I lost count at 26), the sound of the packing tape now just freaks me out. We have been in this home now for about five years but the rents are increasing and I see a move on the horizon - Oh well. The best time is when everything is unpacked and put away - pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

  175. Kate,

Congratulations on selling your house in this market. I totally understand what you mean about moving. I have moved from NY to Seattle and then back to NY. Good luck on your move. I would be happy to take some fabric off your hands anytime.

    Take care,

  178. God luck with your move! It takes so much energy but your cats will love the boxes. My cat adores boxes and bags and other hidey holes.
