Fresh

Happy New Year! Hope everyone is off to a wonderful beginning to 2012. I've cleared off my bulletin boards, erased my memo boards, filed paperwork, cleaned off my desk, sharpened my colored pencils and am ready to start designing. It feels so good especially because 2011 ended in a splashing bellyflop when all efforts to maintain balance between work and everything else...in a word...flopped. But without rehashing all that was, let's look forward to all the possibilities for making this a fulfilling year. I know i've got some new plans, new goals, new things to learn and another chance to strive for balance. So far, so good.

I always love to begin the year with a bouquet of fresh flowers to brighten the first days of January with their beauty and sweet fragrance. Apparently Franny seems to like this tradition as well.

How do you begin your year?

Oh! And for any brave souls who are so inclined to face the winter chill...there is going to be a spectacular (or so they say) meteor shower early early tomorrow morning. To read more about it and to know when to set your alarm clocks, click here. We might just be kookoo enough to try to catch a glimpse. Hoping for clear skies!

  2. I think it's a lovely tradition, Kate! I can't say that I have any particular traditions or rituals to ring in the new year..

  4. Thanks for the meteor tip. Too bad it wasn't 2 days ago. I had to take one son to catch his shuttle to the airport I was driving from 3 to 5. That's not a great time to be awake but for a meteor shower, maybe so.

  5. I love fresh flowers! I generally start out the year de-junking my life. It's a constant battle.

  6. Kate, I'm sorry about the 'belly flop'--there are so many things happening this time of year...it's like a big vortex. Starting Fresh is a great thing--your Home Page looks really nice, too.

I may not see the meteors-sounds like the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, where I am), will be 'dicey' at best.

Anyway, i started the New Year completing a UFO (UnFinished Object in quilt-speak), which had been waiting since August--for a friend. She was delighted, as was my kitty, Maggie; who had to come in my studio and help out!

It feels really great to get that done, and now, of course, I want to get in there and rearrange and reorganize!

    enjoy your day.

  7. Love the idea of fresh flowers and clean slates! I usually start the new year with a new project, and this year I have started a quilt for a friend. Can't wait to see what you create with those colored pencils!

  8. I wouldn't call it a tradition, but I do tend to clean up my sewing room at the beginning of a year - usually to work in the goodies I got for Christmas! Your flowers are beautiful, and I can't wait to see what you create this year!!

  9. Thanks for the reminder about the meteor shower. Why is it on the coldest morning of the season though? Of course, it will warm up so it can rain again. I guess the October storm will have to do for the year. Too back it wasn't enjoyable - too long without power. Can't wait to see your creativity with your freshly sharpened colored pencils! Happy New Year!

  11. Well we are starting a new year in a new place. My DH got a job in Utah so we moved from California to Utah and we couldn't be happier. We spent a year here while my husband was looking for work and we loved it here. Unfortunately he ultimately found work back in California so we went back unwillingly. It was just contract work and didn't have any benefits but it was a steady paycheck and experience to put on a resume so we went. But now he has a full benefit job and we are in a place that we love! Who could ask for more in a new year? Thank you for sharing your little slice of life with all of us and I wish you and your family a very happy new year!
