Merry Moda Blog Hop!

Or it could also be called the "Moda Jingleblog Hop"? Nah, that might turn into "Jingleblop" which just doesn't have the festive ring to it that Head Elf Lissa was probably hoping for when she came up with this sweet idea. Hmm, how about "Moda Claus Is Coming to Town"? Anyway, no matter what you're calling it, i hope you're having fun visiting everyone and collecting all the block patterns and yummy recipes that have been shared. The blocks would make a really cute sampler quilt (i can say that now that i actually know what one is), or pick a few and make a wall hanging, table runner, pot holders, pillows...the list goes on.

The block i designed for you is called Parfait and you can download it here along with a recipe that was given to me many years ago from a very dear friend. She called the recipe The Perfect Cupcake and it definitely lives up to its name — especially if you pile on the ganache frosting. But if you do that, you might want to change the name to The Disappearing Cupcake. Hope you enjoy them both! Here is what the quilt block looks like in
some prints from Terrain.
sorry for the poor-quality after-midnight-up-too-late photo
I would like to thank Super Elf Lisa Christensen of Three Kids Designs for her help in writing up my block design instructions. As much as i try to take this step, she always makes it look so much easier than i can imagine — and in fewer steps, too! I would also like to thank you for making my world so much happier and brighter by sharing your amazing handmade creations with me. It is a joy and blessing that lasts all year long.

And since not many opportunities come along where you can segue into a chat about parfaits, i just have to share this with you now. I was on Etsy recently and came across a shop called SouZou Creations. You have to see it to believe it! I am dying over some of their jewelry. Sofia gave me permission to show off this adorable parfait ring:
how cute is that?
And these strawberry jam filled cookie earrings:
love!
Ok, moving right along...

Around here, we're starting to have a merry little Christmas. It started with this merry little tree that we put up last weekend.
It has filled our living room with the sweet smell of pine, and brightened the evenings with its soft twinkling lights. I probably don't even need to tell you how happy Franny and Lou were that we brought a tree into our home...just for them of course. And then once we started decorating it, they were so excited to have a whole tree covered in new cat toys! One of my favorites happens to be one of their favorites too: the fuzzy puffball snowman head.
I should have guessed.
But luckily, we were smart enough to put our very special ornaments close to the top and out of paws'-reach. This is one of our most treasured. It was hand-painted by our dear friend Melissa. Not sure if you can see it, but there is a clothesline circling the ball and on one side are Santa's coat, pants and mittens...
art is ©Melissa McNamara
...and on the other side are his socks and undies!
Speaking of Santa...when my sister and i were kids, my Mom and Dad...er...i mean Santa really got creative with the whole stocking tradition. They would find zany things that looked like they might be from other countries — like a book written in Japanese, or tiny ceramic painted clogs from Denmark, or candy from Germany — and my sister and i delighted in imagining how Santa must surely have picked these things up and tossed them into his giant sack as he travelled the globe in his sleigh. It was a magical adventure to sort through the trinket-ie treasures and a memory i will keep forever.

**Update: My Dad just emailed me to say, "What about how Santa would knock over the firescreen and then leave his footprints in fireplace ashes all over the rug?" I guess that must have been his favorite part! See? Memories for everyone. Thanks for reminding me about that, Dad. Love you.**

So in honor of this tradition, i'd like to give away some fun surprise stocking stuffers! I don't think you'll want to miss out on this...cough, cough Good Fortune...cough Terrain. Please just leave a comment below and I'll pick a few winners over the weekend. (Some of you were so quick and left comments before i revised this part! So if you renamed the blog hop, or told me your favorite holiday tradition, don't worry...you'll still be entered in the giveaway!)

Please remember to visit these designers who are also posting today:
And if you've missed anyone along the way, you can go back this post for a complete list of designers to visit. Thank you for stopping by!

  1. HHmm - the "holiday blessings blog hop" is a nice, appropriate name. Your tree is very pretty.

  3. I am kind of a fan of the Jingleblog Hop name, although I can see how it could be mixed up. ;) But my favorite Christmas tradition is definitely tied between decorating our tree (love all the twinkling lights) and watching my kids faces as the see everything Christmas morning. Thanks for the great giveaway and the great block and recipe. Merry Christmas!!

  4. I like the "Jingle Blog Hop" but I can see why you didn't pick it...

My fave Christmas tradition is our feeding frenzy spread among my whole extended family. We jam 3 Christmas's into 1 day, and eat a whole meal at each one.

  5. My favorite tradition would have to be all of us going to church on Christmas eve, then gathering with family to open presents.

  6. I think hanging stockings was a favorite. As we enlarged the family thru marriage and births, more stockings were hung. Most in laws had not hung stockings but quickly got int the whole idea!

I don't know that I would rename the blog hop. Something descriptive and short maybe. Moda Holiday Blog Hop......blah.

  10. How about "In the Christmas Moda" Blog Hop? Moda substitutes for "mood" or "mode". Sounds corny, maybe that's why they didn't really give it a name!?!

  11. My favorite Christmas tradition is reading "The Night Before Christmas" just before going to bed on Christmas Eve. We've done this since the kids were small and it always brings back fond memories, especially of when they were learning to read.

  51. LOL! I bet those kitties are having a great time with the new toy! One of our kitties was 8 months old last Christmas. She decided to take a flying leap and jump into the tree. Our 6 pound kitten knocked over a fully decorated 7.5 foot Christmas tree! Yep, her name was MUD for a couple days! This year she's all grown up and so far has contented herself with just making the ornaments she can reach swing gently. Fingers Crossed!

Love the story about the stockings! What fun people your parents must be!

Merry Christmas to you! Thank you for the block pattern and the recipe!

  60. Love the stocking tradition. I'm going to use that idea for next year for my grand nieces and nephews - they would be so excited. This year, they are enjoying an online advent calendar with a London theme, and I hear that they come home from school every day asking if it's here yet. :-) Thank you for the block pattern and recipe. Merry Christmas! :-)

  61. My cats are also thrilled about having 2 trees full of cat toys. I have a cute little fabric snowman that my great aunt made years ago - no matter where I put it on the tree, they get it! I don't even want to know how they manage that maneuver!

  64. sadly I think that I'm not going to put up my tree this year. My cat chew on it, chews on the lights, pulls ornaments off, jumps into it, tries to climb it, etc. So I've all but decided not to do battle this year. My apartment seems so plain without it though, like Christmas isn't coming!

Love your stocking tradition - how fun! Your block pattern is great too. I don't know the actual name of the blog hop, but it's loads of fun. And I'm not entirely sure if I'm supposed to list my own favorite tradition, but since I am going to be becoming a step mom next year, which will be my first experience with children of my "own", I am looking forward to coming up with new traditions for our family.

Thanks for the giveaway and Merry Christmas!

  79. Your story reminds me of one of our family traditions. Since we live in the Southwest and we figure Santa has probably had his fill of milk and cookies by the time he gets here, we leave him chips and salsa and an nice cold beer. It is after all, the end of his trip and he can use a little pick me up.

  94. Having to place your favorite ornaments near the top of the tree reminded me of the Christmas I decided to make large gingerbread cookies and hang them on the tree. However, I didn't take into consideration our dog Sooner, an alaskan malamute. After waking up one morning and seeing lots of missing cookies and parts of gingerbread men still hanging on the tree, I decided that foodstuff would not be a part of our Christmas traditions! Thanks for the giveaway!!

    ReplyDelete
  95. clever stocking idea! our stockings had an orange in the toe followed by peanuts and a small christmas candle which we lit by our brunch plate at the table. the oranges were hard to come by during the depression (where this tradition started in my mom's family) so it was a real winter treat and who doesn't like a little candle light in the dark of winter?!

  111. I am always fascinated with what parents do to add to the excitement of Christmas. Santa tore his jacket in our fireplace one year and left a wet paint footprint on the hearth another year (he apparently touched up the paint on the dollhouse at the last minute).
Thanks for the block and recipe.

  112. I wish we could put up a tree this year. But even with the delicate ornaments high up, I'm worried what our 4 month old kittens would do to the tree. This year I'll just have to enjoy everyone else's.

  127. We have an ornament on our tree just for our kitty. It is made of felt, has a jingle bell attached, and is only loosely hung from one if the bottom branches of the tree so that the slightest bat at it will knock it off. We imagine that this whole scheme entertains the cat and distracts her from the rest of the tree that we don't want her to play with ;-). Merry Christmas and thanks for the giveaway.

  143. I think the ornaments are the most special part of Christmas - finding our favorites and the ooohing and aaahing as we take out ornaments we haven't seen for a year. I love the old ornaments from when I was a kid, cough, cough,(a few years ago!) and I even have 2 of the glass birds (without their filament tails) that I clip on the branches with their little spring clips. I think it takes us back to a simpler time.

  144. I love to hear about other Christmas traditions, and wonder what my grown children will do when they start having their own families - I love the idea of items from around the world! Our kids always got a chocolate orange in their stockings, along with a real one! We would then juice their oranges to serve with Christmas morning breakfast!

  164. I love what your parents did for your stocking! It must have been so much fun to open them all. And the cupcake recipe will definitely be doubled. Or more. I used to have a cat who would climb the tree and bat the ornaments off to our dog - who chewed them up. After that, my husband built the cutest white picket fence to put around everything the tree. That saved a whole lot o' tears!

  165. I enjoyed your column today, Kate. Christmas memories and traditions are what keep the spirit going.

I'm looking forward to using Good Fortune in a project. The gingko tree is a favorite of our family.

  166. What wonderful memories. My hubby and I always wrapped our kids' gifts from Santa in paper that wasn't used to wrap any other gifts, and the extra paper was kept hidden. Our kids later told us that they were convinced Santa had brought their gifts because he used different wrapping paper. :-)

I continued that tradition with my children and now my son's family does a variation. They get the new pajamas at Thanksgiving when the Elf on the Shelf shows up.

  181. Now that she is a young adult, my niece has picked up the tradition of filling our stockings,, which is great because that's one thing I always forget about. She finds all sorts of fun little treasures, like the little BlackBerry candy holder, sheep stitch holders for my knitting, and anything with sock monkeys (family joke). It's a really sweet touch for the holidays.
