New Word

Thanks so much for "standing by". And for you super sleuths who were wondering about the bands of colors in that last post...well, you'll just have to keep that magnifying glass handy for some upcoming clues. But i'd say you're hot on the trail..

In the meantime, this is a little random (and still not the ravioli lesson!), but i'm always excited when i learn a new word and it sticks enough for me to remember it — either because of its sound or it's just fun to say or because its meaning is something so magical and amazing that it's too hard to forget. This word has everything going for it:
Have you noticed that maybe you wake up a little earlier because it's lighter outside in the morning? Or maybe you feel more energetic now that the days are getting longer? Or maybe there's an extra little lift to your spirits knowing that we're rounding the corner to Spring? You feel it too? I sure do!

And you don't have to look to hard to see evidence of this phenomenon. In fact, the other day while i was watering my houseplants, i noticed that after being dormant all winter, they've all quite suddenly started to grow again. Yup, zeitgebers at work. My Hoya went from this:
to this (in less than a week):
And our Madagascar Jasmine has started to send out new vining shoots:
So has my Passion Flower:
Temperature is another zeitgeber, and i'm ready for that one to kick-in around here so i can finally put these sweaters and boots away! How about you?

  1. The hoya takes me back - lived in Alaska for 35 years and we had one growing in the front entry. Grew into a monster plant but so beautiful when it bloomed. Light was something everyone looks forward to when living up North!

  2. I've just started noticing a few green bulb leaves pushing their way up through the ground. And the longer days. Daylight saving time is less than two weeks away!

  12. I was given a Hoya a few years back, and I placed it in the corner on the wooden ledge near our jacuzzi. That plant grew up the corner wall, and one branch went one way and another branch went the other direction. It literally took over our bathroom. I have to admit it felt a little creepy like it was a living thing! Ha, it was, but you know what I mean! My husband said to get rid of it! Don't you know those tendrils clung to the walls, and it was a real chore to tear that thing down. I hadn't thought about that Hoya until your post. Yours looks manageable and very pretty. :)

  14. Hi Kate, love your Hoya. Does your's drip sap everywhere, that was the one thing I used to get annoyed about with my one, I had to make sure it was on a mat.
My parcel arrived in the mail box yesterday. Thank you so much for my little mini squares of Central Park and Let Petit Poulet, I'm feeling a couple of table runners coming on soon hopefully.
    hugs Deb

  15. This new word explains perfectly why "Daylight Savings Time" always "feels" so wrong! Thank you!

  16. Thanks for the new word. I'm loving those colors still - wonderful for a new fabric line to be introduced at Market right? "time giver" - is there a theme in your new fabric line related to time? Your hoya photos are gorgeous.

  17. Yay! I found your site. Love it. Beautiful pictures. I am making a big teddy bear out of your Fandango line for my girlfriend who is having her baby next Friday. My other friend, is making a quilt out of Fandango. Should be too cute. It was a warm sunny day here. I am having a very hard time getting motivated to go to work tomorrow. Spring fever. Bring on the sun.

  18. I have a hoya which has been in my possession for over 20 years. They are amazing plants and so beautiful when they bloom. I do not know another person who owns one, and now I do. Thanks for sharing your photograph.
