Latitude Batiks

Keeping a secret like this is so hard, but at last, i'm happy
to introduce Latitude Batiks.
In creating my first line of batiks with Moda Fabrics and their artisans on the island of Java, i was reminded of hand-spinning the world globe in my grade school library. I'd close my eyes and spin the globe then stop it with my index finger. Wherever it landed, i'd zoom off to colorful, exotic places i could only begin to imagine. Those horizontal lines of latitude around the belly of the world were the guides i'd follow to find my way back to home. I've always loved maps for the dreams and journeys they inspire. And in collaborating on this fabric collection, some of all that came to life.
Section of a 17th century map of Java and Surrounding Areas
I had a feeling you'd scroll down to the fabric photos (am i right?), but wanted to share how interested i was to learn that Java is home to about 150 million people, or about half the number of us in the United States, and it's just a bit bigger than Pennsylvania. Surakarta (also known as Solo) in central Java is where the Latitude batiks were made by hand. Surakarta is not only a major center for dyed batik fabric, but also the historic royal capital of Java. There is a batik museum there. On October 2, 2009, UNESCO designated the art of batik-making on Java as a "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity." Since then, October 2nd has become National Batik Day in Indonesia. I hope to get there some day to thank the team who did such great work in making these for me, Moda, and, I hope, for you!

Having never designed batiks before – other than as part of a summer camp project – i thought a good place to start would be "at home" with familiar prints and colors so i could see what happens to the designs and colors throughout the process. Because of this, Latitude includes some favorite prints from my previous Moda collections including Fandango, Terrain, Sunnyside, and Paradiso, along with some new ones, that i interpreted and simplified for batik. The artisans in Java took it from there and brought their incredible talents and skill to our collaboration. I specially selected the palette to include colors that will coordinate with almost all of my collections, including the most recent ones, Canyon and Aria.

I have also never tried to use batiks in my quilting before. Have you? It's probably because i felt somewhat intimidated by not having a sense of how they can work together. So i figured i'd better get busy and dip a toe in. I picked out a range of blues and intended to make only a small block of 1.5" squares, but ended up quadrupling it and making this block because i wanted to see the full effect of the gradient created by the color placement. Now i can see a whole quilt – but these pieces are way too small! Maybe this will become a pillow... or...?
I'd love to see what you make with Latitude! Please hashtag #LatitudeBatiks when you post on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. I look forward to seeing the special places that you take these fabrics to, to color your world.

P.S.: Latitude will also coordinate with a future line that I'll be telling you about in May ;)

...we listened! Remember when we asked you which out-of-print fabric line you'd like us to stock in our online shop? Well, you can now find a limited number of Central Park bundles listed for sale.

Blast(s) from the Past and a Survey

One of my favorite parts of each day is when i happen upon an inspiring fabric-ie project that someone made using their creativity, imagination, unique perspective, talents and their two hands. Sometimes the projects might even include fabrics i've designed for Moda Fabrics...and let me say that the excitement i feel when i discover your beautiful work does not get old! It's an immeasurable joy for me and if i've left a comment on your blog that's maybe verging on "gush-ie", i'm sorry but i just can't help it. If i've missed finding/seeing any of your projects and you'd like to share, please consider doing so on my Facebook page. I'll definitely see it there — and will probably gush over it!

A few recent highlights included seeing a free quilt pattern using Daydream (shipping now), a beautiful window display Joyce put together with all sorts of projects using Sunnyside, a cute quilt on Etsy using mixed-lines, as well as quilts made with Joy and my next winter line, Solstice.

Sometimes i come across a project that uses fabric from an out-of-print line like these from Verna, Fandango, Central Park, Terrain, and Good Fortune. Remember them!? Seems like so long ago...

Meredith F. made this delightful decorative pillow using Verna.
Paisley Crazy made this “Senior Year” Quilt for her daughter in college using the “CharmingStars” pattern, designed by Stefanie Roman of Little LadyPatchwork, and fabrics from Fandango.
Gretchen of Stella Bella Quilts created this Schnibbles quilt using the “Four Corners” pattern by Miss Rosie’s Quilt Co. and fabrics from Central Park.
Misa Martin made this Supernova quilt using fabrics from Terrain.
Sue Pfau of Sweet Jane’s Quilting created this quilt using the “Journey” pattern by Sweet Jane’s and fabrics from Good Fortune.
We get lots of emails from people hoping we might know where they can still find cuts from some of these lines and much of the time we have no idea...until now. We've decided to start stocking limited-edition-specially-selected bundles of out-of-print lines in our online shop. What we'd like to know from you is: which fabric line would you like us to stock next? Please click here to take a quick survey to let us know your favorites. We appreciate your help so much.

Have a beautiful weekend!

Sewing With the Underdogs

There comes a time in my designing life when i have to face the cold hard fact that some things eventually end up in the sale bin. But i learn a lot from digging around in there...like which colors didn't do as well as others, which patterns might not have resonated as i'd hoped, etc. etc. And it's really only because i try to improve what i do that i even go through the pain and agony of wanting to know about the flops and flounderers by taking a peek at what's been marked down, reduced, sniff sniff, or even slashed.

But there's a silver lining. You know how sometimes you're determined that the best things in a sale bin must be at the bottom of the pile, so you have to dig down deep to find them? That's what happened when i discovered the misfits from Fandango and made these...
Yes, i'm a little obsessed with zig zags these days. I can't help it — especially after stumbling across this clever tutorial for how to make a chevron pillow from regular ol' striped fabric. But then i thought...hmmm, why not make my own stripes first? So i did. And followed the rest of the directions as written. Well, amost...except that i made them as envelope-style pillow covers and modified the size to fit my pillow forms. As you can probably see, i made the stripes in varying widths and kinda wish i'd have made some really thick ones and really thin ones for more of a noticeable contrast — something for you to consider if you want to make any. I also pinned every zig and zag so the points lined up, which was a little time consuming but worth it in the end!

The sashing are strips from a Snow Bella Solids jelly roll (9900JR-11) that alternate with these prints:

Gold:
Castanet 27047-15
Simpatico 27050-15
Canto 27048-15

Celadon:
Seville 27052-22

Sand/Celadon:
Portico 27049-22

And here are a few online retailers that still have these prints available:

Hooray for the underdogs!

Surprises

In the July newletter, i let subscribers in on a little secret about a new collaboration and told everyone to keep their eyes peeled for new products this August at...

Yippee!! I'm so excited to be working with my fabulous partners at International Greetings to bring some colorful stationery and organization items to Michaels craft stores.

But guess what? I found out from one of my wonderful newsletter readers that they were already in her local store about two weeks ago! Maybe they're in your store too? If so, and if you want to roll your sleeves up and dig through the giant overflowing baskets of fun, you may come up with some of these goodies:
Notecards, magnetic notepads, pocket notepads, file folders, list pads, chunky pens, luggage tags and even emory boards! Great for back-to-school, party favors, or just to toss in your bag, keep by the phone, stick to the fridge...whatever!

And if there are any Fandango fabric lovers reading this..Michaels is also carrying these supercute desk items in the home office aisle:
Know what else shipped early? Precuts for Terrain! Exciting!
I found out from someone on Twitter. The bright side of not knowing when things are going to happen (exactly) is that it's a surprise for me too (and i love surprises)! So thank you for keeping me in the loop :)

Sewing and Zucchini

Those are only two of the things i'm having a hard time keeping up with lately! Another you may have noticed is my poor ol' neglected blog. But you didn't come here to read about excuses, so let's just sweep that little fact under the proverbial rug, ok? ok. *wink*

My friend Kathy over at Pink Chalk Fabrics has been hosting "Where I Sew" month on her blog. Maybe you've been following along? The idea is simply to share some peeks of our sewing spaces — that means you, too! There is a "Where I Sew" button down there on the right sidebar that looks like this:
Click and it will take you to a page where you can add a picture of your own sewing room to the mix. It's been such fun (in a droolie kind of way) to see the variety of creative spaces that people have made for themselves. I've certainly picked up lots of great ideas for storage and shelving — you can never have too much of either. Kathy invited me to participate in the feature part, and today is my day! Go on and have a peek, but i have some confessions to make about the photo:

• My work table usually has piles of well, work on it. So yes, i admit it, i cleaned up before snapping the picture.

• I pieced the Fandango quilt top on my sewing table last December and have not gotten around to finishing it yet. It's my first UFO! I have to say it's kind of driving me nutso to see it folded and just sitting there on the shelf. But as you can see, i moved it closer to my sewing machine. Maybe that will do the trick?? Am i in denial?

• My entire work space, including where i sew and run my entire business is 11 feet 3 inches by 11 feet 2 inches. When a space is that small, believe me, every inch matters.

Kathy's online fabric shop is wonderful and her blog is informative and fun with great sewing tips/tutorials and info on trends in the fabric industry. In fact, i knew her blog long before ever meeting her in person and once we finally met at Quilt Market last fall, i felt i had known her forever! She's just that kind of person. Thank you, Kathy, for putting together this fun event and i can't wait to see where you sew!

And i leave you with...zucchini!

Those shades of green and the bright yellow blossoms are so beautiful, aren't they? But seriously, how do these things grow so fast?! It's gotten out of control around here. We're picking them by the armfuls and the situation has quickly gone from a gardener's delight to a cooking conundrum in a matter of days. All of these are sitting on our counter right this very minute:
Any ideas? I need your heeelp!

New News!

New plates have arrived at Crate and Barrel! YAY! I can't even tell you how excited i am about these. The first set is called Delilah — shown here with the solid "Max" Dinnerware collection:
photo courtesy of Crate and Barrel

Notice anything familiar? *wink, wink* "Canto" is one of my favorite prints from my fabric collection Fandango and so it was such a thrill to see how the amazing creative team at Crate and Barrel interpreted it on these 6 colorful plates. They used a wax resist with the glazes that gives the plates a really wonderful and irresistible texture.

The second set of plates is called Triana and you might see something a little familiar here, too!
This design was derived from the pattern Esplanade from my fabric collection Central Park. How fun would it be to make some coordinating napkins or placemats to go with these!? You may remember that this stone medallion was my original inspiration for the motif:
(if you're ever in New York City, you can spot this in Central Park on the left side of the left staircase heading down to Bethesda Fountain)

Here's one of the in-store displays:
I'm always inspired by the merchandising at Crate and Barrel and love how they've used the natural and neutral colors of the chairs, tablecloth, napkins and wood placemats to accentuate the colorful dinnerware. The wavy rim of the soup bowl is such a nice touch. There's still a contemporary style to the overall look, but a soft, welcoming informality too. Don't you just want to pull up a chair?

Both sets of plates are available in stores and online now!

BIG, GIGANTIC GIVEAWAY

I couldn't figure out what to title this post, so i thought that might get your attention. Did it work? Then, i accidentally hit the "publish post" button before letting you know that you could win this huge, monstrous, immense, colossal, mountainous (you get the picture) fat quarter pile of
Fandango goodness!
All you have to do is tell me...if you were a fabric designer, what would you name your Fall collection? That's it. Oh, and if you don't already follow my blog, can you pleeeese sign up? My husband promised to take me out to dinner when i hit 300. If you're #300, as a special thanks for freeing either of us from having to cook dinner, you'll get a little something special as well! I'll pick a name next Tuesday, the last day of August.
Good luck!

Dry Spell

Oh it's been so hot lately that it's caused a drought on my blog. Maybe you've noticed? Not a drop of anything on here for quite a while now. How about we cue the rain and i'll share a downpour of photos and we can whiz through the last month (or two) in picture form? Sound good? Ok, put on your raincoats and Wellies and let's go jump in some puddles..

Starting with (don't laugh) quilt market (i know, i know...):
fandango precuts are now available
Here i am with Monica, Brenda, Pam, and Nireko. We're in the Lecien booth and know why we're smiling so much? Because we're standing in front of Monica's new Christmas line, Holiday Happy, and those gnomes are just
so adorable.fandango precuts are now available
Here's Shannon, Me and Emily. I loved meeting these two Crazy Old Ladies. Their quilts were really beautiful and they've got some great patterns that you should definitely check out. Their patterns Maison Bleue using Martinique and Best Friends using Bliss are in the b/g, see them? They've also got Liliana, Tiger Lily, and Season's Greetings that i'm particularly fond of *wink*. So these two lived up to the c r a z y part of their name. They actually drove to a nearby Crate and Barrel and bought a couple of my plates, then came back the next day and had me sign them with a Sharpie! Too funny.
Here's Jana of Izzy & Ivy Designs, and Julie of jaybird quilts. There's quite a lot of talent in this picture. I happened to mosey by when these two were chatting and Julie was doling out some of her delectable chocolate covered pretzels. Lucky me. Jana showed me this adorable table topper she made that is a mix of Modern Meadow by Joel Dewberry and Verna...
fandango precuts are now available
...and her Farrah bag made using Fandango. Love it? Want it? Go get it!
fandango precuts are now available
I borrowed this pic of Joanna and Eric Fig Tree because it was just so cute. Can't remember where i got it. As you already know, Joanna's beatiful new line is called "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
Well, after dinner we were walking back to the hotel and look who we spotted on the street?! Audrey herself. She does look a lot like Joanna wouldn't you say? Even Mr. Fig was faked out. Here's me, Patty, and Joanna. This pic was borrowed from Patty's blog (another benefit of waiting so long to post about market). Doesn't it look like I have a "Patty Young" thought bubble coming out of my head?Me with Anne Bunny Hill Sutton. I was so delighted to finally meet Anne and to have a personal tour of Lily and Will's room. Anne is as cute and sweet as her new fabric line...really. Moda is so lucky to have her as
part of the family. It was so fun to reconnect with other Moda designers, and to meet so many wonderful new people. As usual, i didn't take enough pictures, but by now you've seen them all anyway! One last one that Jocelyn of FQS took. I sure don't have to try too hard to be a dork. Really, it comes quite naturally. And that's a wrap on market. Did i mention that Fandango precuts are now available?? Why not go and yourself some! Did you see Karrie Lynne's beautiful quilt on the Moda Bake Shop? Oh i just love it so much i had to show it off.
Jump...next puddle...

When i got home from quilt market, this bloomed:
It's a night blooming cereus that once belonged to my great grandmother, Granny. The original plant was given to her by her sister after a trip to Mexico sometime around 1916. After Granny died, cuttings of the plant were shared by family members. Then many years later, after i had graduated from college and took an interest in growing house plants, my Mom gave me this cutting. It has miraculously bloomed every year, and once it actually had three flowers on one leaf. Amazing!
The thing about this plant is that it only blooms at night, hence the name, and it only blooms for one night so you really have to pay attention and watch the buds carefully. The flower and its fragrance are magnificent and if you've ever smelled one, you'll never forget it. It transports me to all the summer nights of my childhood when we'd sit on the porch and watch the petals open. Look at how the giant flower is attached to the leaf from only one teenie tiny spot:
I guess while i'm at it, i might as well show you Jack, my streptocarpus. Jack was Granny's son/my grandfather, and this was a cutting from his plant. I remember so well the windowsill it sat on in his house, and
in his care.
He's quite a beauty and will bloom for most of the summer. It seems that plants are passed along in my family as living heirlooms...which to me, is a beautiful way to remember loved ones and to extend the caring nature
of their spirits.

Jump...

Some more of my paper tableware designs were on an end cap at Target:
They were displayed with a bunch of Luau-wear..hula skirts, palm trees, and my favorite, a tiki bean bag toss game (i've certainly never had to design one of those before):
Jump...next puddle...

June was mostly full of deadlines, follow ups from Surtex...and strikeoffs (yippeee!) It took me so long to find the right blue for you that at one point my desk looked like this:
See what we have to go through? I should buy Epson stock before designing my next fabric line. You might want to think about that too. But have no fear, i think the blue turned out juuust right.

Jump...big splash...

The July issue of Better Homes and Gardens arrived in my mailbox and i was totally shocked to see the napkins i designed for Crate and Barrel right smack on the cover! Woohoo!
Jump...next puddle...isn't this fun?

In late June, Peteand i sneaked away for a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary.
We went up to Bar Harbor, Maine
and revisited the very spot where we were married at sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. Here's the view from up there, overlooking Frenchman's Bay:And the moon rising:
(i wish i'd had a better lense on my camera to capture just how beautiful this was)

A little trivia...Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on America's Atlantic coast (1,530 ft.), and is the first place in the U.S. to greet a new day. For me and Pete, our sunrise ceremony was a beautiful and symbolic way to begin a new life together.

We hiked about 8 miles one day (that felt like 18). Here's my own Indiana Jones blazing the trail. And yes, we did climb up all those ladders. Down too. (don't ask):
We went out on a boat tour to Little Cranberry Island and walked along its rocky coast
One of my favorite things about Maine is the way the mountains and the ocean meet in a wall of evergreens. One day, walking down a dock, i spotted this box (not like the usual UPS delivery around here, that's for sure):Just like it says, contained inside were these:
You know, to keep lobster claws closed until you eat them. And eat them we did (maybe almost too many, if that's possible).
Yum! And you know what you can have for dessert? Take a minute to look verrry carefully at the ice cream selection at Ben and Bill's.
See it? Down there on the lower left? That's right! In case you were worried,
YUCK-O! No thank you.

Jump...jump, jump...

Some of you are participating in the Fat Quarter Shop's Designer Mystery Block of the Month Club. Well, the first adorable block arrived. It was designed by Gudrun of G.E. Designs. She's so talented and this block was such fun to piece together. At long last...drum roll please...here's my finished block:
By the time i finished this, i had clearly stretched my sewing abilities to the limit. And only a couple days after i finally completed it, adorable Block Two arrived in my mailbox. This one was designed by Bonnie and Camille. You just can't believe how cute it is. Some people have already posted pictures on flickr. In fact, one person finished it the day it arrived. I think i had gotten as far as opening the envelope. Inspiring for sure.

Speaking of inspiring...look at this beautiful quilt Cherie made using 12 Days of Christmas. She posted it on flickr too.
The pattern is "Plan C" from Carrie Nelson's book Schnibbles Times Two.

The last puddle is, sadly, a giant puddle of tears. With great sorrow and heavy hearts we had to say goodbye to our beloved kitty Cyrano last week. He was with us for 17 joyous years and was lovingly woven into the fabric of our daily lives in so many ways — some of which i've only come to know in his absence. I have tried to stop myself in the midst of (now) old routines and am trying each day to embrace the realization that it's out of devotion and love for that little furry creature that i continue to go through
these motions. We miss him so much.
I can't possibly end on such a sad note, so,..one more jump...
Here's a view of our summer gardenwhere there is always peace whether it rains or not.
