Summer Solstice aka: The Longest (Sewing) Day of the Year

Hi everyone! Can't believe the Summer Solstice is already here (it officially arrives tomorrow morning June, 21st at 6:51am EST). Hope you've got some fun plans for making the most of the longest (or shortest) day of the year. For those of you in the southern hemisphere, the days will only get longer now for you – hooray! We’ll be visiting family, checking out some gardens up in the foothills of the Berkshires with some friends, attending a local fundraiser concert for the public schools, and...weeding the garden.

Before the crab grass stakes its claim on all the cracks and pathways, thought i'd show you some photos of our garden from a couple weeks ago, along with some of my favorite spring blooms.

Here's the veggie area in raised beds that we built last year.
Because we've had such a prolonged and cool spring, it's been the best lettuce season i can remember in a long time!
We also had a healthy harvest of baby bok choy:
Here's a view of the flowery garden area with the flagstone patio and parterre we made last summer — i still kinda can't believe we took on a project like that. Crazies!
And here are the beauties of our spring garden...whose gorgeous colors and elegant shapes will continue to inspire me long after their blooms have faded.
The summer bloomers are already on their way, and so are the sweet peas! Stay tuned.

Almost forgot! to celebrate the Solstice, and to kick-off the summer sewing season, we're giving away a Fat Quarter bundle of...Solstice — my new Christmas/winter fabric line for Moda Fabrics!
Please leave a brief comment regarding something you like to do on the longest (or shortest) day of the year. One entry per person. The winner will be randomly selected on Tuesday June 24th.

Have a beautiful weekend!
xo,
kate

  1. About to leave work on this gorgeous Maine day and go home and play with dogs and then sew with all the windows and doors opened!

  2. On many of these long days of daylight, including today, I like to take a walk with my husband after dinner. We live in Minnesota, where winters seem to keep getting longer and summers shorter, so I don't want to miss out on any of it.

  3. If it doesn't rain, it will be drinks & a fire on the deck tonight.

  4. Way back in 1986 I got married on the Summer Solstice. My husband carried on about "our wedding day was the longest day of the year!". He's a laugh riot. Or not. Twenty eight years later we're still going strong, so I guess it all worked out.

  5. Homemade Mac and cheese and movies with the kids tonight. Nothing fancy but it makes us all happy.

  12. We plan to have dinner with our neighbors and enjoy a hopefully rain free day by getting our lawn chores and garden weeding done. I hopefully can then move on to more sewing repairs/ redesigns, before getting down to making some fall table runners for a friend!

  13. Today it's working in the yard, then tonight will be spending time with my hubby working on our truck project (36hillbillydeluxe.com) until dark, then sewing until I can't keep my eyes open anymore :)

  14. Well, all day off and on, I have fondled a charm pack of In from the Cold, so I guess in my heart I would like to be sewing something with a winter motif. Could it be the temps are nearly 100 degrees. The slugs are eating everything the deer don't get......And we need rain. Or snow!

  15. It is raining here, so I will be spending the evening sewing or at least prepping some handwork.

  32. OH gosh, I just love those beautiful flowers and the pathways.

I'm really not sure we'll do too much although we do have the house to ourselves for awhile tonight so we'll probably just relax together since it will be quiet with my son and his family, (which includes our adorable 2 yr old Granddaughter who is very active) out for night. We need the time to relax because every night this week, except Monday we've left as soon as hubby got home from work and didn't get home until 8-9pm.

We are having the shortest day here in Melbourne.....but I have the longest list of things to do - including children's sport, two birthday parties to attend and a load of washing a mile high! But what I would LIKE to be doing is taking my latest quilt finish to the local park to get some good photos! I tried to do it yesterday afternoon, but it started raining lightly and then the battery on my camera died! Doh! Anyway - happy Summer Solstice to you!

I love to do a little bit of everything so the day is productive and fulfilling...a little laundry, some grocery shopping, maybe a bit of housecleaning and gardening, sewing of course, cooking and perhaps bake a little something, and then enjoy the evening after the kids are in bed with my crocheting. Your flowers are gorgeous! Our raised beds still look pretty good too...but I'm sure the weeds will take over very soon!

    Your gardens are beautiful!
I really like your "Solstice" fabric line. I've never wanted to make a Christmas quilt till I saw your fabric, and I'm plotting in my mind what I'd like my quilt to look like. The whole line is lovely, but I'm especially drawn to the particular green that you used - it lightens the whole look.
