Furry Friday

On January 1st of each year we (usually) do lots of cleaning around here to start the New Year off sparkling and dust-free. Now to see how long we can keep it this way! One of the other things we do is our rotate our mattress. Does anyone else actually do this? I have no idea whether it really helps, but we do it anyway. We leaned the mattress up against the wall so i could vacuum the bed frame and i turned around a few minutes later to find:
They spent much of the day napping atop Mt. Mattress and occasionally peering out from their slumber to take in the landscape of their empire (including their house servants..ahem) from this new point of view.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  3. those 2 are purr-fect...love that picture..
Someone told me the difference between dog and cats. I have no idea who orginally said this..but it goes like this. A dog looks up at his master and thinks "you feed me and give me shelter, YOU must be King". A cat looks up at his master and thinks "you feed me, give me shelter, I must be King"!!!

  5. I wish I had your energy. I just started taking Christmas down yesterday, but will leave the tree, and creche till the weekend. It will be a while (if ever) before we are sparkling and dust free!

  6. I love cats! They're so random. It really makes life more entertaining- what a great photo! I always rotated my mattress (when I'd think about it)--not that I'd ever keep track of how worn out it was. You don't always have money to replace a mattress! Have a great weekend.

  9. Too funny! The only thing that could make that spot more perfect for the cats would be having the sun shine on it!

Just saw some of your new fabric lines over at Green Fairy Quilts listed for pre-order... gorgeous! Just gorgeous!

  10. How funny! When we moved from California to Utah a couple of weeks ago my cat did the exact same thing. We had the mattresses up against the wall so we could get the frames together and he just hopped on up there (well climbed to be exact) and stayed there until we had to get the mattresses down. I hope Franny and Lou had a great time!

  11. Your cats are so cute! Will we see a "Furry" line soon, to go with "Flurry"? :) Yes, I rotate my mattress -- every 3 months. I'm still working on the rest of New Year's cleaning chores, though!

  13. LOL! "Mt. Mattress"! That is too cute! I really think your kitties should consider entering Mango Minster (my boys are two of the judges... http://www.armyoffourdigest.blogspot.com/2012/01/mango-minster-2012-adventure-animals.html)
    It's all in good fun.
We do rotate our mattress. I'm not sure if it helps, either, but I feel compelled to do it.

  14. Your cats are too much!! Love all the photos of them, but this beats all! At least you have a mattress that can stand up on its end. We got a new thick latex mattress this summer - we had to take it off the frame to level the frame and literally got stuck with the thing bunching all up on the available floor space. This thing weighs 200#s and turns into jello when not supported! Finally, after an hour of one of us literally stuck on the other side of the bed, we managed to inch it up and over the foundation boxes, and slowly pull it up, thus flipping it earlier than we anticipated. I'm not sure that we'll even attempt to flip it any time soon!:-)

  15. My husband just commented the other day that we need to turn our mattress again as we haven't done it for a little while. The new year seems like a good marker to remember!

And any time I've had a mattress on end in my house, the cat has found the top of it to perch on!

  16. Very funny. I have a Tabby cat who would have done exactly the same thing! Currently he has "adopted" a rather nice woven straw hamper that I got for Christmas as his new scratching post! Grrrrr!

  17. OMG!! I bet they would have climbed on top of our pile. Then they would have jumped when I made it crash:)

  19. My cats would be up on mt. mattress also! How they love to have high ground to see all that happens around them. I also rotate my mattress - not sure if if works, but my mom always did...and so...I continue the tradition!
Best wishes for a great 2012!

  20. So cute. When I change the sheets on our beds my cat always plonks himself in the middle of the mattress. Even when the sheets are thrown over he stays there!

  21. Too cute! My cat got stuck behind the tv the other day. She thought it looked like a good idea until she couldn't fit her way back out!

  22. Hahaha -- that's too cute! Aren't kitties fun?

  23. Yes, I rotate our mattresses. I know it has some sort of affect because my husband always comments about the "weird" shape of the mattress whenever I do it. And my dearly departed friends used to plant themselves on top of the mattress while I had it up against the wall. It was so easy for them to dig their claws in and climp to the top... Especially my Monkey - he thought it was terrific. Love seeing pictures of your Franny and Lou - keep 'em coming!

  26. Kate ~ That is so funny. Cats are always looking to take advantage of stuff like this. They cannot stand something that's changed and must investigate. I should say MOST cats do because mine does take every opportunity to check new stuff out that's different in his house, but he's so laid back that he doesn't want to expend too much energy so he would not have jumped up that high. LOL Ragdoll's are supposed to be very laid back and he sure does follow the true breed in that way. I need a cat like your two that want to check stuff out more. This one just follows me everywhere, and yes, including INTO the shower. He's obsessed with being where I am and when I go behind that shower curtain he gets really upset.

Mattress turning ~ we do ours about every six months or so and yes, it does really help. I can tell a definite difference when it's been turned for awhile.

Cleaning ON New Year's Day is very bad according to Chinese superstitions. Read more here http://www.yunhoiwingchun.com/Articles/General/ChineseNewYear2011/tabid/239/Default.aspx

Here is the part about cleaning and what they say:
    "Some traditional practices:
The entire house should be cleaned before New Year's Day. On New Year's Eve, all brooms, brushes, dusters, dust-pans, and other cleaning equipment should be put away. Sweeping or dusting should not be done on New Year's Day for fear that good fortune will be swept away. After New Year's Day, the floors may be swept. Beginning at the door, the dust and rubbish are swept to the middle of the parlour, then placed in the corners and not taken or thrown out until the fifth day. At no time should the rubbish in the corners be trampled upon. In sweeping, there is a superstition that if you sweep the dirt out over the threshold, you will sweep one of the family away. Also, to sweep the dust and dirt out of your house by the front entrance is to sweep away the good fortune of the family; it must always be swept inwards and then carried out, then no harm will follow. All dirt and rubbish must be taken out the back door."

Of course, in your case, you want the "GOOD FORTUNE" to be swept away this year. hehe (sorry had to say it and certainly not meant the way the Chinese think)
