My First Quilt

Like any beginner cook in the kitchen, there's nothing quite like a trustworthy recipe to follow carefully in order to learn the basics. Someone has already tested and refined the ingredients/proportions and has selflessly offered a path to you on how to get to the same yummy results they did. We're lucky to benefit from these kitchen pioneers (thank you, Julia).

Where am I going with this? Well, I wanted to make a quilt. I'm a beginner. So I was in search of a good recipe to follow. I found a great book called Jelly Roll Quilts by Pam and Nicky Lintott, and I also happened to have a jelly roll! After flipping through the book, I found a design I liked then took the advice of many of you wise quilt pioneers and read through the instructions several times before starting to cut. I put so many of your suggestions to good use.

It was so rewarding and exciting to make my very first quilt out of my very first fabric line — kinda hard to explain actually. The patterns and colors worked together in ways that really surprised me. Totally fun and unexpected. Ok, so here it is:

Is it perfect? NO WAY.
Was it a little ambitious for a beginner? YES.
Did I learn a lot by diving in to the deep end? YES.
Did I have a blast? YES!
Do I love my seam ripper? You better believe it.

  15. Oh c'mon, you put us all to shame! That is your first quilt?? It turned out beautifully, of course. What a lucky girl you are- your first quilt of of your own fabric? Not too many people can say that. I'm working on a little something out of Verna right now too. So fun!

  16. Great job for your first quilt! The fabric looks beautiful - can't wait to get it. I used your Christmas paper products from Target for my guild's Christmas party and everyone loved it!

  18. Beautiful.

I don't know anyone else that can beat the impressive feat of making their first quilt out of their own fabric.

Perhaps it would be like painting a picture out of paint you have crushed and mixed up yourself like they did in the very olden days. You can probably call yourself a master craftswoman.

  21. Kate, It is just lovely. I am very impressed by your first quilt. And how exciting that it is from your own fabric! I too am working on Verna projects like Camille. I did just get back my first table topper in Verna from my quilter. As soon as I bind it, I am sending you a pic. I also dropped another Verna runner to him a couple of days ago. I know, I just really like this fabric line. It's great that Moda saw your potential and introduced you to the quilting world!!

  24. Hi Kate,
are you sure that you didn't cheat? Is this really your 1st quilt? For real? It's GORGEOUS!!! Such a vivid & sparkling quilt - much more interesting than the both quilts shown in the book.
Have fun snuggling up under your OWN quilt for Christmas...
    Hugs, Julia

  26. This is beautiful! You're first quilt, I would've never guessed...you're a pro! I too have a long time love affair with my seam ripper. No matter how much I think I know what I am doing, I always do something wrong.

Keep up the awesome work and I can't wait for your fabric to make it's way to the stores.

  28. You are amazing. Wow, is a good word for your first quilt. My first was a log cabin that is falling apart at this point. Made from country novelty prints, it was a bit scary... and nothing like your first!
    Congratulations!
I am sending you some goodies soon....
